Modeling of ultrasonic fields and their interaction with defects

Abstract: Ultrasonic modeling at the French Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) is based onto continuous developments o f two approximate models covering realfirst model, based on an extension of the Rayleigh inteistic commonly encountered NDT configurations. The gral, is dedicated to the prediction o f ultrasonic fields radiated by arbitrary transducers. Being computed the This two step modeling yields the prediction o f echofield may be inputted in a model o f the echo formation.structures detected with transducer scanning… Show more

“…The beam computation module computes the ultrasonic beam profile inside the material and the defect response module determines the interaction of this beam with the defects introduced into the virtual component. The results for defect response are given in the form of A, B and C-scans and echo-dynamic plots [18][19][20][21] . The present simulation study was carried out for a Zr-2.5% Nb pressure tube of 82 mm ID and 4 mm thickness.…”

“…They can be found with different approaches. The most rigorous approach is to simulate the ultrasonic field radiated by a point in direction of the probe elements [6]. This allows a very accurate measurement of the times of flight but can not be embedded in portable systems.…”

“…These methods are based on the impulse response (IR) method [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10], the angular spectrum technique [11][12][13], the finite element analysis [14,15], optical geometry studies [16,17], multi-Gaussian beam models [18] and so on. Using some of them, simulation tools have been developed for evaluation assessment in medical applications [19] or other sophisticated software packages, such as the CIVA program [20] for industrial NDE.…”
