Modeling of Urban Wind Field Effects on Unmanned Rotorcraft Flight

Abstract: Surveillance applications of unmanned aerial vehicles within urban areas is made difficult by turbulent winds generated by buildings. A methodology is proposed by which urban wind data is evaluated, selected, and applied during flight simulation. The urban environment is represented by a combination of discrete single buildings and canyons each easily amenable to computational fluid dynamics. These simulations are used to generate a database of building wakes for various wind conditions and building configurat… Show more

“…Orr et al [9], [10] used a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) solver to generate static wind fields and assess the waypoint following performance of a fixed-wing UAV. Another effort was made by Galway [11], [12] to simulate an autonomous helicopter in a sparse urban environment. Galway used a CFD model to compute wind fields around cross sections of individual and small groups of buildings for a spanning set of prevailing wind speeds and headings.…”

“…The results emphasize the effects of wind on a small size UAV, and the need for a robust flight control technique which can deal with adverse wind conditions. In another study, Galway et al, 20 documented the urban wind gust effects on the flight performance of a Yamaha RC helicopter. A simulation tool was used where a selection algorithm determined if the current vehicle position was influenced by the building wake.…”

“…Nowadays, small rotary-wing VTOL UAVs are becoming widely used in many fields such as urban photography [1], fire detection and control [2], and agriculture operations [3]. One limitation of small UAVs is that they are sensitive to wind disturbance, leading to degraded flight accuracy and safety.…”
