Modeling Patient-Specific Desaturation Patterns in Sleep Apnea

Abstract: The physiological mechanisms involved in cardio-respiratory responses to sleep apnea events are not yet fully elucidated. A model-based approach is proposed to analyse the acute desaturation response to obstructive apneas. Methods: An integrated model of cardio-respiratory interactions was proposed and parameters were identified, using an evolutionary algorithm, on a database composed of 107 obstructive apneas acquired from 10 patients (HYPNOS clinical study). Unsupervised clustering was applied to the identif… Show more

“…Various models of the cardiovascular system have been previously developed by our team [9,10]. We proposed the first patient-specific model of the left ventricle that successfully simulates myocardial strains in dilated cardiomyopathy [11].…”

“…This analysis is essential for diagnosing, monitoring, and treating diseases [15,16]. At present, there are several studies focused on verifying and using cardiorespiratory models in different situations, including exercise [17,18], cardiovascular surgeries [19,20], respiratory disorders [21][22][23], mechanical ventilatory support [24], and others. Among these situations, physical exercise can be especially important to diagnosis and clinical prediction because exercise is a natural stimulus that generates significant and well-characterized variations in related physiological systems [25,26].…”

“…We have recently proposed an integrated cardio-respiratory model adapted to the physiology of preterm neonates [9]. This model is an adaptation of an adult model previously proposed by our team [10][11][12]. Structural modifications were made as well as parameter adjustments based on the preterm infants literature [6,13], by scaling method [7] and manual adaptations.…”
