Modeling Sustainability of Complex Systems: A Multi-Scale Framework Using SysML

Abstract: In this paper, we propose a framework to design and analyze sustainability within complex multi-scale systems. Systems that have large variability in temporal and spatial resolution are common in lifecycle analyses and sustainability studies. Unlike traditional problems in systems engineering, these systems are composed of numerous interacting layers, each intricate enough to be a complete system on its own. In addition, the goal of achieving an economically and environmentally sustainable system introduces ne… Show more

“…4). An increase in ridership of MARTA by the same factor of 6 will fundamentally convert MARTA from the most carbonintensive mode to the least one in Atlanta (Azevedo, Bras, Doshi, & Guldberg, 2009). In future, it means fewer stations are required and significant reductions in transit system expansion.…”

“…Matar et al 65 proposed a SysML systems-based model aiming to facilitate the realization of sustainable construction, by identifying the environmental impact of each production activity. In Azavedo et al, 69 a multi-scale framework was developed to model sustainability of complex systems. This study proved that the use of formal modeling by SysML makes it possible to address problem emerging from complexity management within a large, multi-layered system.…”

“…11) Ability to Integrate with LCA tools/ data structures SysML can be exported in the Extensible Markup Language (XML), which facilitates information exchange between standards that support Metadata Interchange (XMI) [20]. SysML can also integrate between various LCA tools, which greatly expands the scope of its lifecycle coverage [49]. Work has also been done to integrate ISO 10303 and ISO 15926 with the CASCADE model, [50] which supports LCA.…”
