Modeling the role of government efforts in controlling extremism in a society

Abstract: People having extreme idealogies affect the process in a region using fear of terror acts, money power, and the word of mouth communication network to change individuals to their way of thinking. This forces government to divert its limited financial resources for controlling extremism and thus affecting development. In this paper, therefore, a nonlinear mathematical model is proposed to study the dynamics of extremism governed by four dependent variables, namely, number of people in the general population hav… Show more

“…This class includes propagandists and enablers. The treatment class T(t) consists of extremists that prisoned in jails or deradicalized in rehabilitation centers [8]. The aware class A(t) is the result of successful deradicalization processes and thus consists of individuals who are sensitized and dropped extreme ideology [7,9].…”

“…Again a reasonable system of ODEs on 4 variables is built and its predictions are compared with real figures in attempt to evaluate the key parameters. In [104] the authors group the population in three classes: extremists E, susceptible S and reserved (isolated in jails). Moreover they add an additional variable G measuring the level of efforts of the government G, and build and study the system of ODEs on four variables (depending on certain numeric coefficients).…”

“…Applications of mathematical epidemic theories to social phenomena were proposed for a long time [11,19]. However, Mathematical models have also been applied to investigate a variety of "contagious" social phenomena like crime, opinions, addiction and fanaticism (see for instance, [3,4,5,13,14,15,16,24,25,35]. A mathematical model of crime epidemic is proposed in [13], to gain insights into the best policies regarding criminality.…”
