Modelling Anaerobic Digestion Processes

Abstract: Anaerobic process modelling is rapidly expanding as new processes and reactor designs are developed, and a better understanding of the underlying processes is established. At the same time, new applications and demands on the art have been developed, particularly the generation of bioenergy and fuels, as well as plant-wide modelling of wastewater processes, and the integration of activated sludge and anaerobic models. This has required a rethink of what should go in the model, with a focus on the biochemical p… Show more

“…The hydrolysis constants k h of NP and AAS manure fibers were calculated by fitting a 1st order model to the CH 4 production of biochemical methane potential (BMP) tests, as described in Lymperatou et al [11]. Based on the k h calculated, the following equation was used for predicting the CH 4 yield of manure fibers in continuous AD [24]:…”

“…The Anaerobic Digestion Model 1 (ADM1) was published in the IWA's Scientific and Technical Report No. 9 and has since become the most relevant model developed for the simulation of anaerobic treatment [6,7]. The ADM1 was designed in such a way that a standard parameter, Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD), and the process configuration of a continuously stirred tank reactor were used to determine the composition of various wastes [8].…”

“…High accuracy of thermodynamic data is a prerequisite of process simulation results obtained from the Gibbs energy minimization method. The biochemical conversion processes are simulated by rate-limitation step models [10], anaerobic digestion No.1 [11], artificial neural networks models [12], and practical biochemical methane potential (PBMP) model [13] in the literature. In this study, the PBMP model is selected for the process of methane production evaluation to assess the performance of an anaerobic digester.…”
