Modelling and control of a hybrid power filter to compensate harmonic distortion under unbalanced operation

Abstract: This study presents a model-based controller for a hybrid power filter (HPF) to reduce the current harmonic distortion in a three-phase system for a general operation case considering unbalanced and distorted source voltages and load currents. The HPF comprises an active power filter (APF) grid connected by means of an LC passive filter. This topology is aimed to reduce the current rating handled by the APF, representing a cost effective solution. The controller design is split into two stages, a first one to … Show more

“…In [16], the operation principle of the single-phase HAPF structure and a relatively complicated control system are presented, although, the grid current quality and the THD improvement are not impressive. In [17], the authors proposed modelling of the three-phase three-wire HAPF structure in αβ reference frame and a model-based controller design is described. However, the control structure of [17] is very sensitive to grid frequency changes.…”

“…Shunt HAPF topology has been used for the mitigation of harmful harmonics by various researchers [14–17]. Due to series LC filter coupling of HAPF, it has some advantages over traditional shunt APF converters [8].…”

“…In Fujita and Akagi, 5 a hybrid topology with combination of passive filter and active filter is presented, in which the passive filter removes the harmonics and active filter compensates the load reactive power. In Valdez‐Fernandez et al, 6 a hybrid power filter is discussed, which is capable of harmonic compensation under unbalanced operation. But this method requires high value of dc‐link voltage for satisfactory compensation.…”
