Modelling and experiments of PLZT/PVDF hybrid drive method for non-contact shape adjustment

Abstract: In order to improve the technical specifications of space reflectors, antennas and other payloads on Earth observation, space communication, deep space exploration and other fields of space applications, people urgently need to enhance the surface shape control accuracy of these large complex curvature flexible structures. Based on the photovoltaic effect and converse piezoelectric effect, this paper presents a non-contact shape-adjusting method which adopts a new space energy conversion: using the PLZT photov… Show more

“…Poosanaas-Burke et al (2000) pointed out that the optical second-order nonlinear effect mainly leads to the photovoltaic electric field using the voltage source model, and then proposed a mathematical model without time parameter. Based on the above-mentioned constitutive equations, many scholars have researched the active vibration control and shape of photostrictive laminated flexible structures (Rahman and Nawaz, 2011; Zheng, 2012), beams (Sun and Tong, 2008; Yue et al, 2014; Zheng et al, 2014), plates (Luo and Tong, 2011), and shells (He and Zheng, 2014; Jiang et al, 2013; Shih et al, 2004, 2009; Wang et al, 2011). However, the response of photodeformation is far slower than the photovoltage, which was experimentally discovered by Saitoh and Kametani (1996) and also investigated by Huang et al (2015b).…”

It was proven by these studies that the novel actuation mechanism possesses a great potential application in the vibration control and shape control of shell structures and other micro actuation fields, while only a rough mathematical model was established, in which the coupling mechanisms of multiphysics fields and the equivalent resistance of piezoelectric actuator were not taken into consideration.…”

“…Over the past years, scholars have investigated indepth studies focusing on the practical application of PLZT ceramic in microdrive area. Yue et al [2] proposed a PLZT/PVDF hybrid drive contactless shape adjustment method and proved its effectiveness in cantilever beam deformation control. The high-performance transparent PLZT ceramic fiber made by Chen [3] can be used to manufacture high-frequency ultrasonic transducers and apply in the field of imaging.…”
