Modelling Flexibility and Qualification Ability to Assess Electric Propulsion Architectures for Satellite Megaconstellations

Abstract: The higher satellite production rates expected in new megaconstellation scenarios involve radical changes in the way design trade-offs need to be considered by electric propulsion companies. In relative comparison, flexibility and qualification ability will have a higher impact in megaconstellations compared to traditional businesses. For these reasons, this paper proposes a methodology for assessing flexible propulsion architectures by taking into account variations in market behavior and qualification activi… Show more

“…The Design Catalog approach (Cardin et al 2015) partly solves the complexity issue by using a factorial analysis technique to generate a catalog of options to be embedded in the system that performs better overall at the cost of loss in resolution. Some researchers have adopted an explorative approach, where Monte Carlo simulation evaluates several decision rules via iterations (Gamba 2002;Panarotto et al 2020;Sapol & Szajnfarber 2022). Monte Carlo simulation samples the uncertainties and generates several representative future scenarios.…”

“…These include choice modeling (He et al 2012), usage coverage parametrization (Yannou et al 2013), EVOKE (Bertoni et al 2018), EVA (Rondini et al 2020), and so forth. Particularly for operational scenario analysis, for instance, discrete-event simulation, agent-based simulation or hybrid approaches may also be adopted (Douglas, Mazzuchi & Sarkani 2020; Panarotto, Borgue & Isaksson 2020). A rigorous discussion of these methods is beyond the scope of this paper.…”

“…Panarotto et al [35] researched the incorporation of nonfunctional requirements, such as flexibility. This inclusion was achieved by defining the flexibility of the design as a constraint (C) within the function domain.…”

“…At present, xenon is used almost exclusively as an ionizable propellant for space propulsion [2][3][4][5] . However, xenon is rare, it must be stored under high pressure and commercial production is expensive [7][8][9] . Here we demonstrate a propulsion system that uses iodine propellant and we present in-orbit results of this new technology.…”

“…At present, the propellant of choice is xenon. However, xenon is very rare (less than one part per ten million in the atmosphere), and commercial production is both expensive and limited [7][8][9] . There are also competing applications that use xenon, including lighting and imaging, anaesthetics in hospitals 9,19 and etching in the semiconductor industry 20 .…”
