Modelling groundwater residence time in a sub‐irrigated buffer zone

Abstract: This study focuses on the short groundwater residence time induced by the development of a dense rooting system in a forested area employed as a buffer zone planned for nitrogen removal. The buffer zone consists of a rectangular area of 0 center dot 7ha sub-irrigated by two ditches and drained by an outflow ditch lying in the centre of the area. The pristine soil (silty clay loam) was characterized by a low hydraulic conductivity, but the agricultural practice first, and then the rooting system increased the p… Show more

“…In the two sub-basins of Marzenego and Dese-Zero, 23 NBS of these types were created. As an example, Figure 2 shows the satellite views of two wetlands (Salzano and Rusteghin) and two buffer strips (Scandolara and Nicolas-selected because of their longterm monitoring activity [52][53][54][55] realized within the basin, which are described more in details in Supplementary Online Materials.…”

“…These preferential flows allow pumping in the system volumes of irrigation water higher than what would be expected based only on the saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks). As a consequence, water moves through the soil creating subsurface flows with different velocity (Mastrocicco et al, 2014).…”

“…To better describe the hydraulic behaviour of the system, tracer experiments were performed in 2008 (see Mastrocicco et al, 2014). These results indicate that deep seepage from the shallow aquifer into the underlying alluvial was negligible and as a consequence the input of deep groundwater to the shallow flow system was excluded.…”

“…La conducibilità idraulica misurata tramite slug test differisce sensibilmente (anche di un ordine di grandezza) rispetto a quella teorica attesa per i diversi tipi di suoli. Ciò è imputabile generalmente alla presenza di macro-fessurazioni nei suoli derivanti dalle operazioni di aratura o in alternativa all'effetto degli apparati radicali come descritto in altri studi (Mastrocicco et al, 2013).…”
