Modelling Norm Scores with the cNORM Package in R

Abstract: In this article, we explain and demonstrate how to model norm scores with the cNORM package in R. This package is designed specifically to determine norm scores when the latent ability to be measured covaries with age or other explanatory variables such as grade level. The mathematical method used in this package draws on polynomial regression to model a three-dimensional hyperplane that smoothly and continuously captures the relation between raw scores, norm scores and the explanatory variable. By doing so, i… Show more

“…Lastly, as a supplemental analysis, according to previous studies procedures (Dakanalis et al, 2013), a "general sample" of patients with cancer was created by merging the sample of Study 1 and the sample of Study 2 (N total = 1153). Thus, according to the procedure described by Gary et al (2021), normative scores (T-scores) of the PDI-R were computed as well as the distribution percentiles of its total score Gary et al, 2021).…”

“…In order to create population norms, we used the polynomial regression to capture three dimensional relationships between norm score, explanatory variable (i.e. age) and expected raw score of the OASIS [51]. Descriptive and inferential statistics procedures were done in R [Version 4.1.3; [52]] using the following libraries: lavaan [53], papaja [54] psych [55], usf [56],…”

“…The cNORM package is designed to determine norm scores when the latent ability to be measured varies with age or other explanatory variables. Gary et al [27] briefly introduce the statistical modeling behind the implementation and apply their proposed method using a real dataset from a reading comprehension test.…”
