Modelling of lower hybrid current drive in self-consistent elongated tokamak equilibria

Abstract: A simulation model for current drive by lower hybrid slow waves has been generalized to accommodate elongated plasma cross-sections. Toroidal ray trajectories are computed from the magnetic field, density and temperature distributions obtained from a numerical, free boundary solution of the Grad-Shafranov equation. A numerical solution of a relativistic Fokker-Planck equation is used to compute the absorbed power and the driven current. This lower hybrid model has been incorporated into the ACCOME code which i… Show more

“…As explained earlier, ICRF is applied to a given plasma either for heating or driving currents, both of which will unavoidably have an effect on the equilibrium itself. First attempts to evolve the equilibrium have been undertaken in [11]. These authors studied lower hybrid current drive scenarios and allowed for a current density variation determined by a simplified model comprising a unidimensional Fokker-Planck code coupled to a ray tracing method.…”

“…3 was to isolate (in a parametric sense) the effect of the temperature variation in the weak damping limit. Prior studies of LHCD have achieved MHD equilibria consistent with the LH current drive source by iterating between an MHD solver and the current drive calculation [Bonoli, 1990] [Devoto, 1992]. These studies indicate that the LH current density profile changes primarily due to changes in the poloidal magnetic field as the MHD equilibrium is re-solved.…”
