Modelling of Rock Cutting with Asymmetrical Disc Tool Using Discrete-Element Method (DEM)

Abstract: The use of asymmetrical disc tools for the mining of hard and very hard rocks is a promising direction for developing mechanical mining methods. A significant obstacle in developing mining methods with the use of asymmetric disc tools is the lack of adequate computational methods. A deep understanding of rock–tool interaction can develop industrial applications of asymmetric disc tools significantly. The fundamental problem in designing work systems with asymmetric disc tools is the lack of adequate analytical… Show more

“…However, the parallel bond model can transfer not only the force but also the torque and moment between particles based on the assumption that particles are connected through an invisible cylinder using LS DYNA's DE_BOND option, as shown in Figure 3. The parallel bond model is an analysis technique primarily used to simulate the mechanical behavior of elastic solids and the initiation and propagation of material failure 16 . The parallel bond model was defined by the parameters of normal and shear stiffness, tensile and shear strength, and bond radius per cylinder area.…”

“…Additionally, the DEM is widely used in various fields including rock and soil mechanics and has achieved numerous significant results [5,7,10,17]. The simulation programs can be classified as Discrete Element Programs if they meet the following criteria: (1) applied in the field of rock and soil engineering, such as rock fragmentation, landslide, and seismic events, with functionalities similar to PFC.…”

“…However, mechanized fast and safe breaking technology for underground hard rock is still lacking, which has become a difficulty restricting the efficient mining of coal mines and the rapid excavation of rock roadways. On the basis of the under cutting method with disc cutter, the author proposed the integration of advanced slotting technology into the disc cutter cutting rock as shown in Figure1 2,12,13,18 . By slotting the rocks on the cutting path of the under cutting disc cutter in advance, the difficulty of wedging the disc cutter into hard rock is reduced so that the disc cutter can make full use of the non-tensile property of the rock to wedge the hard rock and reduce the difficulty and load of the disc cutter cutting hard rock.…”
