Modelling the Emergence of Spatial Patterns of Economic Activity

Abstract: Understanding how spatial configurations of economic activity emerge is important when formulating spatial planning and economic policy. Not only microsimulation and agent-based model such as UrbanSim, ILUMAS and SIMFIRMS, but also Simon's model of hierarchical concentration have widely applied, for this purpose. These models, however, have limitations with respect to simulating structural changes in spatial economic systems and the impact of proximity. The present paper proposes a model of firm development th… Show more

“…Externality operating across all industrial entities affects the overall spatial scale of a wide area beyond the city scale. It is estimated that externality operating by the industry sector affects the economic activities within the city scale [17]. This step can be summarized with two assumptions: Hypothesis 1 (H1).…”

“…If a city is a product of socioeconomic dynamics formed by physical constraints [16], we can assume that its growth is determined by how MAR and Jacobs externalities overcome these constraints [15,17]. If the economic and industrial policy is a function-oriented approach that deals with urban growth, a mathematical basic frame is needed as a starting point to link functions and forms (i.e., to converge economic policies with spatial planning).…”

“…It is analyzed how specialization between regions and the agglomeration of creative activity is influenced by different aspects like the educational system or migration incentives. In [96] the emergence of spatial patterns of economic activity is analyzed from the perspective of firms which grow at different rates, might spawn spin-outs and relocate. The interplay of Marshall and Jacobs externalities with congestion effects is captured in an agent-based multi-level, multi-scale model.…”
