Models and theories of care applicable to predicting and improving adherence behaviours among Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) patients

Abstract: Introduction: Models which relate to cognitive variables and processes may apply to adherence behaviours in patients with chronic conditions. Management of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) requires incorporation of these models to facilitate the positive adherence behaviours among patients. Aim: This article critiques models and theories of care applicable to predicting and improving adherence behaviours among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Methods: Medline, Ebsco, PubMed, Google Scholar, Cinahl and g… Show more

“…The model-based approach assists in promoting or changing behavior by understanding adherence to health behavior. This approach includes the Health Belief Model, Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), Theory of Reasoned Action, and other theories or models [ 14 ]. TPB is a social-cognitive approach that provides a useful framework for predicting and understanding health-related behaviors [ 15 , 16 ].…”

“…This constructive coping will maximize the patient's potential for self-regulation. A study conducted by Chironda et al, (2019) identified information about models and theories of care for the management of patients with CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) which could improve patient compliance. The advantage of the Common Sense Model (Self Regulation) theory is sourced from the theory of individuals who act to prevent, treat, cure or adapt to acute or chronic diseases experienced and a good self-regulation process will help individuals to manage the disease and this further improve compliance.…”

“…15 Literature shows the evidence to prove that the dialysis, medication, dietary and fluid restriction among patients with CKD contributes to issues of non-adherence. 16 Personal beliefs, cultural and social characteristics, and drinking of water and certain fluids are factors influencing the treatment regimens. 17 There are several physical and emotional symptoms the CKD patients experience in the course of their treatment.…”
