Models of inter-institutional collaboration to build research capacity for reducing health disparities

Abstract: Health disparities are inequities in the health of different groups of people that may lead to needless pain, suffering, and premature death. The Yale-Howard Partnership Center on Reducing Health Disparities by Self and Family Management is a part of a federally-funded initiative to foster the development of partnerships among researchers, faculty, and students at minority-serving institutions and research-intensive institutions. The goal of the initiative is to maximize the resources available to each of the … Show more

“…Existing frameworks focus on various aspects of collaboration, including key concepts/variables at work in research collaborations [Katz and Martin 1997; Larson 2003; Melin 2000; Suchman and Trigg 1986], participants in a collaboration and the division of labor [Jenerette et al 2008; Kouzes et al 1996], and the process of collaboration and activities involved at each stage [Gitlin et al 1994; Kraut et al 1987]. In part, this body of work has also explored the motivations and mechanisms underlying collaboration formation.…”

“…At the same time, we recognize that roles may change over time 20 . Expectations of collaborators-that is, the nature of their involvement and the responsibilities to which they are committing, among other aspects-must be clear and agreed-on by all parties 22 . A balance between structure and creativity -…”

“…The YHSP Summer Research Immersion component was an intensive 6-week summer research internship at Yale for rising Howard seniors. Selected students formed protégé-mentor relationships with Yale faculty researchers (Jenerette et al, 2008). Over the summer, the scholars engaged with on-going research projects and research teams, participated in a series of research and health disparity seminars, shadowed nurses in advanced practice roles in clinical settings, interacted with other summer health professions programs on campus, and produced an original pilot project based on the parent study of their mentor (Powell & Gilliss, 2004).…”
