Modern Assessments of Intelligence Must Be Fair and Equitable

LaTasha R. Holden,
Gabriel J. Tanenbaum

Abstract: Historically, assessments of human intelligence have been virtually synonymous with practices that contributed to forms of inequality and injustice. As such, modern considerations for assessing human intelligence must focus on equity and fairness. First, we highlight the array of diversity, equity, and inclusion concerns in assessment practices and discuss strategies for addressing them. Next, we define a modern, non-g, emergent view of intelligence using the process overlap theory and argue for its use in imp… Show more

“…These standardized assessment tools continue to be based on ideals that are historically coined by Western communities and scholars, where values of individualism, competition, monolingualism, and self-actualization dominate (Ardila 2005;Ng et al 2022;Suzuki et al 2022). Simply put, traditional measures of intelligence focus on ideals that support mainstream ways of learning, understanding, and navigating the Anthropocene (Holden and Tanenbaum 2023). As such, people of color, especially those carrying multiple minority identities, perform consistently poorer on IQ tests and are erroneously deemed to be less intelligent than their counterparts (Berlak 2005;Crenshaw 1991;Hatt 2007;Holden and Tanenbaum 2023).…”

“…The fields of psychology and neuropsychology have deep roots in structural racism. For example, many current cognitive performance assessments have been criticized for contributing to racially-biased educational placement of BIPOC and low-SES students in special education ( 68 , 69 ).…”

“…The DCM was chosen because of its alignment with the PASS theory of intelligence (Das et al 1994, see below) and the Cognitive Assessment System (CAS; Naglieri et al 2014), which are the focus of this Special Issue. Researchers have argued that the Cognitive Assessment System is culturally fair (e.g., Holden and Tanenbaum 2023;Naglieri et al 2007) and that it has an advantage over traditional IQ batteries because it measures children's "thinking" and not children's "knowing", which is the case with other popular assessments of intelligence that incorporate scores in vocabulary and mathematics in the calculation of an overall IQ score.…”
