Modern Information Technology for Cancer Research: What’s in IT for Me? An Overview of Technologies and Approaches

Abstract: Information technology (IT) can enhance or change many scenarios in cancer research for the better. In this paper, we introduce several examples, starting with clinical data reuse and collaboration including data sharing in research networks. Key challenges are semantic interoperability and data access (including data privacy). We deal with gathering and analyzing genomic information, where cloud computing, uncertainties and reproducibility challenge researchers. Also, new sources for additional phenotypical d… Show more

“…This is an area where self-reported outcomes can potentially provide information on emotions, which would otherwise not be measurable. Further information may be provided by machine learning algorithms tapping into new sources of information, such as online cancer DOI: 10.1159/000505341 support groups for example [55,56]. Our model might help position this input within the shared decision-making process.…”

“…The technicians working on the prevention and treatment of cancer sometimes become clueless because proper protocol and complete research on a disease like cancer are still incomplete. The disease is an elaborative and extensive field that requires many aspects of treatment but is still not researched [51]. Technology and awareness are missing; therefore, the requirement is for a higher level that could diagnose cancer at the earliest stage, and surgery and chemotherapy should have alternative ways as well [36].…”

“…TBs represent an established way to meet this goal [1,[8][9][10]. Notably, comprehensive TB analyses of other tumor entities have demonstrated efficient treatment decisions and adjustments of initial treatment plans in ~ 30% [2,3,[11][12][13][14][15][16][17]. In our initial analysis using our MM-TB and data from 2012-2014, we had described (a) what clinical questions were solved, (b) the level of adherence and evidence for decisions, (c) the frequency of participation in clinical trials, and (d) the level of satisfaction among participants, referrers, and patients [1].…”
