Modern Methods for the Sustainable Synthesis of Metalloporphyrins

Abstract: Metalloporphyrins are involved in many and diverse applications that require the preparation of these compounds in an efficient manner, which nowadays, also involves taking into consideration sustainability issues. In this context, we use ball milling mechanochemistry and sonochemistry for the rational development of synthetic strategies for the sustainable preparation of metalloporphyrins. Zinc, copper, cobalt and palladium complexes of hydrophobic porphyrins were obtained in high yields and under mechanical … Show more

“…In 2021, Pineiro et al prepared a series of metalloporphyrins from their corresponding metal-free porphyrins by sono-or mechanochemical activations. 129 Generally speaking, conventional approaches to metalloporphirins metalloporphyrins involve the complexation of a metal salt by porphyrin in solution. The major drawbacks of this methodology derive from the use of hazardous solvents (e.g., DMF, CHCl 3 /MeOH) and the need for a significant excess of metal salts required.…”

“…Porphyrins are characterized by the presence of four nitrogen atoms in the core of the aromatic ring, capable of hosting metal ions of a wide variety [ 48 ]. The importance of the nature of this metal core is illustrated by the natural porphyrin architectures, which are responsible for performing essential life activities, such as oxygen transport (iron heme and cobalt hemocyanin porphyrins) or photosynthesis and energy transmission in algae and plants (magnesium-chelated chlorophylls) [ 49 ].…”
