Modern Microwave Thermometry for Breast Cancer

Abstract: The temperature of a malignant tumour is a universal indicator of the growth rate of the tumor. Tumor temperature can be used as a prediction of the benefit of individual therapies and in monitoring the efficacy of breast cancer treatment. This review provides a systematic analysis of the data available in the current literature on the role of microwave thermometry in risk estimation, the diagnosis of breast pathology and in assessing the effect of neoadjuvant therapy for breast cancer treatment.Various aspect… Show more

“…The problem of the effect of microwave radiation on enzymes is of great interest. Particularly, this concerns the power range at the level of background radiation (~10 −12 W/cm 2 ), at which the radiation in enzyme systems is registered 29 and pathological changes in human are detected 30 . The impact of microwave radiation on proteins is determined by both the radiation power and the exposure time.…”

“…In recent years, many new publications on the use of MWR in medicine have appeared. MWR is used in mammalogy to detect breast cancer and monitor progress of treatment of various diseases of the mammary glands [1,2]. The method is used in critical care medicine to measure brain temperature during treatment of cerebral stroke and traumas [3].…”

“…The great interest of physicians, biologists and biophysicists to microwave radiometry (MR) is due to the fact that it is a non-invasive method of measuring the deep temperatures of the internal areas of the human body based on their own thermal radiation. This method has received deserved recognition in medicine in the diagnosis of damages of the central and peripheral nervous system, assessment of local inflammatory, traumatic, oncological, vascular and dystrophic diseases of various localization [1][2][3][4][5][6].…”
