Modern Techniques in Knee Arthrodesis

Abstract: Knee arthrodesis serves as an option of salvage treatment for failed total knee arthroplasty procedures. Multiple different arthrodesis techniques exist that cater to the specific presentation of the failed total knee arthroplasty, the three most common techniques being intramedullary nails, external fixation, and compression plates. This review aims to present recent findings of knee arthrodesis procedures regarding the indications, outcomes, and prognostic factors as well as a general description of the tech… Show more

“…Different techniques exist for knee arthrodesis. Long intramedullary nails have been associated with high fusion rates (>81.5%) and are amenable to extraction in the setting of recurrent infection compared with short modular nails that require reopening of the knee joint and are associated with substantial bone loss 21,22 . Reopening the knee in patients with a poor soft-tissue envelope and concern for wound healing, as in this immunocompromised patient with calcific deposits around the knee, can be detrimental.…”

“…Nevertheless, only a few studies have been carried out with the plate EMA. The number of publications comparing this technique with IMA is even smaller [ 30 , 31 ].…”

“…Complicações pósoperatórias da artroplastia incluem inf ecção persistente, soltura da prótese, perda de tecidos moles do joelho, perda óssea e instabilidade da articulação. Em alguns casos, a substituição da prótese e a revisão da ATJ são inviáveis e a artrodese de joelho é a alternativa considerada (KIM K, et al, 2016).…”
