Modes of Brassinosteroid Activity in Cold Stress Tolerance

Abstract: Cold stress is a significant environmental factor that negatively affects plant growth and development in particular when it occurs during the growth phase. Plants have evolved means to protect themselves from damage caused by chilling or freezing temperatures and some plant species, in particular those from temperate geographical zones, can increase their basal level of freezing tolerance in a process termed cold acclimation. Cold acclimation improves plant survival, but also represses growth, since it inhibi… Show more

“…The presence of ROS induces a cyclic electron flow, non-photochemical quenching (NPQ), accumulation of photoprotective proteins, and increased activity of several antioxidant enzymes, thus inducing photoprotection under low temperatures [30]. Furthermore, the BR-induced production of antioxidant enzymes aid in maintaining the ROS homeostasis and induces stress tolerance following cold stress [23,185]. The exogenous application of BRs leads to enhanced antioxidant capacity, orchestrating the alleviation of ROS burst-induced oxidative damage [186].…”

“…pCREs similar to binding sites for BZR1 (rank 1 to 4), WRKY24 (rank seven to eight), and WRKY 30 (rank seven) were also among the most predictive cold-CREs in cold-TFBM models ( S4 fig ). These TFs are known for cold signal transduction and cold stress tolerance via CBF-independent pathways (Park et al, 2015; Ramirez and Poppenberger, 2020). BZR1 is known to be involved in cold stress tolerance through processes such as ROS scavenging (Ramirez and Poppenberger, 2020) and facilitating structural changes in cell membranes and cell walls (Benatti et al, 2012).…”

BZR1 is known to be involved in cold stress tolerance through processes such as ROS scavenging (Ramirez and Poppenberger, 2020) and facilitating structural changes in cell membranes and cell walls (Benatti et al, 2012). Moreover, WRKY TFs are also known to be involved in phytohormonal-induced signal transduction for low-temperature tolerance in plants (Park et al, 2018(Park et al, , 2015.…”

“…In Arabidopsis CES can increase freezing stress tolerance when over-expressed and this is due to its ability to induce the C-repeat/DRE-Binding Factors (CBFs), but also non-CBF pathways (Eremina et al, 2016) implicated in cold tolerance. Since tomato is a chilling-sensitive plant and has hardly any capacity to cold acclimate (Zhang et al, 2004), it was of interest to test if SlCES may be able to impact pathways that confer tolerance also to chilling conditions, which cause damage by different means (Ramirez and Poppenberger, 2020). To investigate this, wild-type and the SlCESoe-9 and SlCESoe-44 lines were first grown at normal ambient temperatures of 25 ± 3 • C. This showed that SlCES over-expression did not induce obvious morphological defects.…”

“…Brassinosteroids (BRs) are steroid hormones that control many different aspects of plant growth and development, with concentration-and organ-specific effects (Fridman and Savaldi-Goldstein, 2013). In addition, they also take part in adaptive growth processes and in both abiotic and biotic stress responses (Nolan et al, 2020;Ramirez and Poppenberger, 2020). BRs act in concert with other plant hormones and in particular cross-talk with the gibberellins (GAs), has received a considerable amount of research attention in the past few years.…”
