Modification of Poly(lactic acid) by the Plasticization for Application in the Packaging Industry

Abstract: Plastic products, especially in the packaging industry, have become the main commodities penetrating virtually every aspect of our lives. Unfortunately, their omnipresence is not neutral to the natural environment. Pollution in the form of microplastics is a global problem. Therefore, green technologies that enter into the circular economy become an important topic. As part of the research work, the modification of poly(lactic acid) has been studied for use in the packaging industry. Due to its intrinsic rigid… Show more

“…Substances with a potential antimicrobial activity may be added to ensure greater food safety and quality. Many compounds are used to increase antimicrobial protection in the food industry, such as essential oils or fatty acids [ 56 , 57 ]. Two compounds of essential oils, eugenol, and thymol were tested and proved favorable effects for preventing biofilm formation [ 58 ].…”

“…These degradation mechanisms produce significant reductions in molecular weight and narrowing of the molecular weight distribution, which deteriorates the mechanical properties, changes the rheological and crystallization behavior, and causes yellowing of the processed polymer [ 15 , 16 , 17 ]. In addition, other drawbacks of PLA include poor gas barrier properties, low toughness and ductility, and high cost [ 18 , 19 ].…”

“…Poly(lactic acid) (PLA), whose raw materials are from sustainable biomass resources such as starchy crops, is a biodegradable and biocompatible material that is currently popular. And PLA is an ideal sustainable substitute to traditional plastics and has been widely employed in packaging, biomedical materials, textiles, and agricultural materials . But PLA is brittle and rigid by nature, which limits its application.…”

Recent studies have reported many works on blending PLA with plasticizers to improve its overall performance.…”
