Modification of polyethylene by unsaturated compounds

Abstract: SYNOPSISPolyethylene was reacted with maleic anhydride and N-phenylmaleimide in solution. The effect of modification on its physico-chemical properties, such as mechanical, oxygen gas transmission, water vapor transmission, and grease resistance properties, was studied.

“…However, materials such as polyester, nylon, and poly(vinyl chloride), due to their polar nature, are good barriers of oxygen but poor barriers of water vapor. 39 The polarity difference caused by the incorporation of HMDI and TDI into PP matrix appeared to be adequate to cause an appreciable reduction in OTR and CO 2 TR.…”

“…However, the use of pure LDPE is restricted because of some of its inherent properties such as, a high oxygen and carbon dioxide transmission rate (OTR and CO 2 TR), poor grease resistance, and limited adhesion to other substances. Hence, it is mostly used as laminated films in combination with other films that possess superior barrier properties, which invariably require the use of adhesives or as co‐extrusion for better packaging applications 2. The intrinsic properties of polyethylene mainly arise from its totally nonpolar nature.…”

“…As mentioned before, polymer-polymer miscibility is generally considered to be a result of the specific interactions between polymer segments, which include donor-acceptor, dipole-dipole, hydrogen bonding, ion-ion, acid-base and ion-dipole interactions. 66 In the studied blends, with hydrophobic/hydrophilic and electron-donor characteristics, miscibility is due especially to hydrogen bonding. In addition, NMP is known as a solvent with electron-donor properties, so that the morphological aspects of blends are determined by hydrogen bonding present in the casting solution system, along with other kinds of apolar interactions; consequently, polymer dissolution is ensured by the interfacial free energy of the polymers versus the solvent, by taking into account the polar as well as the apolar surface tension parameters.…”
