Modification of polyurethane‐coated fabrics by sol–gel thin films

Abstract: Sol-gel derived silica and hybrid films from tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) and 3-glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GLYMO) were deposited by dip-coating, in order to find the best treatment. GLYMO-based treatments preserved textile feel of the material. The coatings were characterized by infrared spectroscopy (IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and water contact angle measurement. IR spectra confirm… Show more

“…Meanwhile a peak at 1532 cm -1 contributed by bending vibration of -NH2 groups from APTES and chitosan appeared in LBL treated fabrics. The peak at 1232 cm -1 ascribed to stretching vibration of P-Oaryl proved the presence of phosphate on AP code samples, which overlapped Si-C band at 1200 cm -1 for all LBL treated fabric samples [6,25,55]. It was determined that a peak at 1040 cm -1 ascribed to stretching vibration of P-O-C from AP15DE overlapped with peak at 1052 cm -1 ascribed to stretching vibration of C-O-C from cellulose, which was supported by Pan et al 2015 [30].…”

“…The thermal stability was improved, and the textile feel of the PU fabrics was saved by GLYMO-based treatments. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images revealed that the PU surface and pores were completely modified with thin hybrid silica films, which were preserved for most of the samples [ 128 ].…”

“…Among polymerization methods, ''sol-gel'' process is found to be an effective and substantial technique to form coating films with various geometrical structures and modify the properties of substrates [17,18]. Sol-gel processes consist of two mechanisms including hydrolysis and condensation.…”
