BACKGROUND Burn wounds are a worldwide health problem, leading to physical and psychological disabilities in all age’s groups. With regard to absorbent properties of Plantago ovata mucilage which can decrease wound moisture, we aimed to compare the effect of silver sulfadiazine (SSD) 1% and powdered P. ovata on second-degree burn wound healing in rats. METHODS This experimental study was conducted on 30 male Wistar rats with second-degree burn in three groups. Group 1 (control) did not receive any treatment; group 2 and group 3 (treated groups) were dressed daily using SSD cream and P. ovata powder, respectively. The weight of rats, wound size (by applying ImageJ software) and percentage of wound healing on the 5 th , 7 th , 10 th , 13 th , 16 th , 19 th , and 22 nd days (by diagnosing a plastic surgeon) and histological cutaneous changes at day 22 were evaluated. The Prism software was applied for data analysis. The Haematoxylin & Eosin as well as Masson's trichrome staining were performed on wound skin biopsies. RESULTS On day 22 nd , 20%, 50% and 60% of the rats had complete wound healing in the control, SSD and P. ovat a groups, respectively. A significant decrease in wound size was shown in the treated groups compared to the control group ( P <0.01), but no significant difference was shown between the treated groups ( P >0.05). CONCLUSION However, the wound healing in P. ovata group or SSD was better than the control group, and the significant difference was not found with the treated group.

BACKGROUND: This study sets out to investigate the effects of early physiotherapy on biochemical parameters in major burn patients. METHODS: Ten women (50%) and 10 men (50%) aged 21-47 years old were included in this study. Participants were divided into two groups: the first group was the treatment group and the second group was the control group. In the treatment group, patients were admitted to the physiotherapy programme from the first day they have been hospitalised, in addition to their routine treatment (e.g. medical, surgery), for four days per week. The physiotherapy programme consisted of parameters, such as early mobilisation and ambulatory training, chest physiotherapy, and both active and passive normal joint movement exercises. The days of treatment were determined as of Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Patients could not be treated on a Monday because that was surgery day. The control group consisted of patients who could not receive physiotherapy due to various reasons. All patients included in this study were evaluated weekly for six weeks after admission to the hospital. Parameters, such as demographic information, characteristics of burn injury, C-reactive protein, fibronectin, transferrin and prealbumin, were evaluated. RESULTS: When the results obtained in this study were considered, there was a significant difference in favour of the treatment group for all biochemical parameters (p<0.05). From the second week, a significant increase was observed in prealbumin values in the treatment group (p<0.05). A significant increase was observed in fibronectin after the fourth week (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: We believe that early physiotherapy should be included in the treatment in major burns. Early physiotherapy may reduce the effects of hypermetabolic response after major burns. There is a need for multi-centered and broader studies.

ObjectivesThis qualitative study aimed to investigate: (1) priorities of patients and healthcare professionals during recovery from a burn injury, (2) how priorities change over time and (3) how priorities map to outcomes currently reported in burns research.DesignSemi-structured interviews were conducted. Interviews were audio recorded, transcribed and analysed thematically.Setting, participantsA total of 53 patients and healthcare professionals were recruited from four National Health Service (NHS) burn services across England and Wales across England and Wales. Patient participants (n=32) included adults, adolescents and parents of paediatric patients, with a variety of burn injuries in terms of severity and cause of burn injury. Healthcare professionals (n=21) were NHS staff members involved in burn care and included professionals with a range of clinical experience and roles (eg, nurses, surgeons, occupational therapists, physiotherapist, administration).ResultsTen themes relating to priorities (outcomes) during recovery from a burn injury were identified for patients and professionals. Of those, six were identified for patients and professionals (‘pain and discomfort’, ‘psychological well-being’, ‘healing’, ‘scarring’, ‘function’, ‘infection’), three were unique to professionals (‘patient knowledge, understanding and support’, ‘sense of control’, ’survival’) and one was unique to patients (‘uncertainty’). Results highlighted that importance of these priorities changes over time (eg, ‘survival’ was only a concern in the short term). Likewise, priorities differed between patients and professionals (eg, ‘pain’ was important to patients throughout their recovery, but not for professionals). Seven out of 10 themes overlapped with outcomes commonly assessed in burn research.ConclusionProfessionals’ and patients’ priorities (important outcomes) change over time after burn injury and differ between those groups. Burn care research should consider measuring outcomes at different time points during the recovery from a burn injury to accurately reflect complexity of burn recovery.
