Modification of the Leuven integrated friction model structure

Abstract: This note presents a modification of the integrated friction model structure proposed by Swevers et al., called the Leuven model. The Leuven model structure allows accurate modeling both in the presliding and the sliding regimes without the use of a switching function. The model incorporates a hysteresis function with nonlocal memory and arbitrary transition curves. This note presents two modifications of the Leuven model. A first modification overcomes a recently detected shortcoming of the original Leuven mo… Show more

“…Nowadays, friction is well recognized: frictional effects in multibody systems are commonly taken into consideration in engineering practice, and some aspects of modeling of friction are taught during multibody dynamics courses at various universities [3,41]. On the other hand, friction in multibody systems is extensively investigated by 21st century researchers (e.g., [7,8,[16][17][18]28]). This paper was aimed at pointing the attention to some important properties of various approaches to friction modeling that manifest themselves in the stiction regime.…”

“…It is representative for a group of models with auxiliary "internal dynamics" state variable that describes the micro-slip during the stiction phase [12]. Apart from the LuGre model, this approach is adopted, for example, in Dankowicz [8,13], Dahl [14], and Leuven [15,16] friction models. In these models, both stiction and sliding regimes are unified and governed by the same equations.…”

“…The modified Leuven model presented in Ref. [90] addresses the issues of memory stack size and frictional force discontinuity at closure of frictional loop with Lueven model. De Wit et al [94] described the loss of performance of high precision manipulators owing to the effects of friction.…”

“…Leuven friction model and generalized Maxwell-slip (GMS) model were proposed by Swevers et al (2000) and Lampaert et al (2002), respectively. The two models were developed based on the experimental findings that the friction force in the pre-sliding regime has a hysteresis characteristic with respect to the position.…”
