Modified AES for Text and Image Encryption

Abstract: Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) is one of the most frequently used encryption algorithms. In the study, the Advanced Encryption Standard is modified to address its high computational requirement due to the complex mathematical operations in MixColumns Transformation making the encryption process slow. The modified AES used Bit Permutation to replace the MixColumns Transformation in AES since bit permutation is easy to implement and it does not have any complex mathematical computation. Results of the study … Show more

“…The correlation coefficient in horizontal direction of the plain and encrypted image are the same which means that the two images are the same in horizontal direction [14]. Figure 1 shows the modified AES algorithm using bit permutation as presented in the study of [13]. The result in the paper shows that the use of bit permutation instead of MixColumns makes the modified AES algorithm suited for encrypting digital images because of increased efficiency and throughput due to reduced execution time and CPU usage.…”

“…The result in the paper shows that the use of bit permutation instead of MixColumns makes the modified AES algorithm suited for encrypting digital images because of increased efficiency and throughput due to reduced execution time and CPU usage. Bit permutation has no complex mathematical operationbut only involves shifting of the position of bits of every state [13]. The proposed modified AES algorithm takes 128bit data length as input and 128 key length which has ten rounds of transformation and used AES-CBC mode in encrypting images.…”

“…However, with the development of new computing concepts that may weaken the strength of current and standardized cryptography, the need to strengthen and provide modifications and diversities in cryptography are being widely accepted [13]. Some studies have proposed modifications to AES: the replacement of mixcolumn transformation to bit permutation to speed up the encryption of texts and images was proposed in [14]. Whereas in [15], three modifications were proposed for encrypting high definition images, first a reduction in the use of mixcolumn from 10 to 5 rounds, second was the addition of mixcolumn in the key schedule algorithm, and third was the use of single S-box for both encryption and decryption.…”
