Modified multilevel inverter topology with reduced switch count and a novel PWM control scheme

Abstract: Abstract-Multilevel converters offer high power capability, associated with lower output harmonics and lower commutation losses. Their main disadvantage is their complexity, requiring a great number of power devices and passive components, and a rather complex control circuitry. This paper proposes a singlephase seven-level inverter for grid connected PV systems, with a novel pulse width-modulated (PWM) control scheme. Three reference signals that are identical to each other with an offset that is equivalent t… Show more

“…In previous studies, the configuration of Figure 2(a) has been applied in the three-level inverter circuit shown in Figure 1 [11], [12], [13] and [21]. This configuration suffers from a high voltage drop that produces high conduction losses and voltage imbalance.…”

“…Newton-Raphson method works efficiently with reasonable initial estimations ( , , and ) and this can be effectively satisfied considering the constraints described in equation (9). Nonlinear equations (5-7) and their derivatives have been rearranged in the forms given by equations (10)(11)(12), and Newton Raphson's next approximation…”

“…Although passive methods are used to solve the problem, leakage rates rise and the space required increases [8]. Multilevel inverters (MLI) provide an alternate solution by employing an altering procedure to generate a sine wave signal in a set of power stages [9]. Additional benefits of MLI include lower electromagnetic interference, lower current distortion, higherquality voltage and current waveforms, and superior quality voltage waveforms [10].…”

“…However, the recent trend optimization in PV systems has been shown to be the implementation of PCS using multi-level inverters [15]- [17]. Among the various MLI topologies, the cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) topology has been preferred in PV systems due to its simplicity and ease of integration with PV systems [18], [19]. In CHB topologies, several H-Bridge cells are connected in series to provide an enhanced output from a low input voltage.…”
