Modified phacoemulsification plus goniosynechialysis compared with conventional surgery for cataract and glaucoma

Abstract: Optic nerve damage and visual impairment caused by glaucoma affect 66.8 million people worldwide, and causing bilateral blindness in 6.7 million people. Surgery is the main method for the treatment of cataract with glaucoma. In recent years, clinicians have increasingly paid attention to and applied phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation combined with goniosynechialysis for the treatment of cataract with angle-closure glaucoma. However, for patients with complicated cataract, the high ultrasonic… Show more

“…Glaucoma is a major economic burden, with as many as 80 million patients by 2020 [17,53,54]. To our knowledge, this meta-analysis demonstrated, for the first time, a strong association between glaucoma and active H. pylori infection as documented by histology (Table 2) with total lack of heterogeneity.…”

“…Glaucoma, leads to the death of retinal ganglion cells and their axons and is the second most frequent cause of blindness worldwide. It affects 66.8 million individuals, causes bilateral blindness in 6.7 million people [ 15 , 16 , 17 ], and is a neurodegenerative disorder of the optic nerve, with the hallmark of increasing “cupping” of the optic disc [ 18 ].…”

“…After phacoemulsification, we introduced viscoelastic into the anterior chamber to make the latter deeper, especially at the site of the anterior chamber angle. Tang and colleagues [12] used a technique for transection of synechia which is similar to ours. We used this technique for intraoperative gonioscopy and for effective GSL in the presence of synechiae.…”

“…In this study, 12 articles that met the inclusion criteria were collected; we found that the modified phacoemulsification had better therapeutic effect and reduced the incidence rate of postoperative complications. In a study by Tang et al, compared with conventional surgery, the modified phacoemulsification (with lower ultrasound energy) and intraocular lens implantation was shown to better improve visual acuity and effectively reduce corneal edema and anterior chamber inflammation (25). Collectively, the modified phacoemulsification is safer and more effective.…”
