Modified Rood’s approach and ability of independent selfcare in haemorrhagic stroke patients of Assam, India

Abstract: Background: Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the primary cause of serious, long-term disability which can be regarded as weakness, generalized fatigue, loss of voluntary motor control or limitation in mobility, spasticity, sensory and cognitive dysfunction. In this research, a comparative study on the ability of independent self-care was conducted between two groups of patients during a 3 months follow-up period viz. Group A - patients who were given Home Exercise Programme (HEP) with conventiona… Show more

“…This method is underpinned by four fundamental principles: normalization of muscle tone through sensory stimulation, adherence to ontogenic developmental patterns, incorporation of repetition, and implementation of purposeful movements. According to Rood, sensory stimulation possesses the capacity to either activate or deactivate receptors through facilitation or inhibition, thereby enabling the attainment of the desired muscular response [ 20 ].…”

“…It emphasizes the use of touch, squeeze, pull, vibration, percussion, and friction to produce different sensory stimulations, and to induce active muscle contraction while inhibiting antagonistic muscle contraction. Meanwhile, the Rood technique can input a variety of sensations into the central nervous system to improve the activity level of central neurons, thereby causing motor, cognitive, and other reactions, and promoting the recovery of neurological function ( Bordoloi and Deka, 2019 ; Bordoloi and Deka, 2020 ; Chaturvedi and Kalani, 2023 ). In this study, DSS device was used to induce active retraction movements of the upper and lower limbs in patients with AIS by targeting the roots of the hemiplegic finger/toennail beds to produce tactile pressure sensation, mild pain sensation, and proprioception stimulation, which meet the definition of the Rood technique.…”

“…14 Another study provides strong evidence that prophylactic heme therapy, through a multi-disciplinary approach, decreases the incidence of acute attacks, decreases health care costs and leads to better patient satisfaction and quality of life. 15 Different therapeutic approaches have been used to enhance the functional recovery of patients 1) Rood's Approach-Improvement in arousal level could be due to the use of Rood's approach.…”
