Modified Single Versus Double-Patch Technique for the Repair of Complete Atrioventricular Septal Defect

Abstract: The modified single-patch and two-patch techniques have comparable results; however, the modified single-patch technique is performed with significantly shorter cross-clamp and cardiopulmonary bypass times, therefore we have adopted this technique on a routine basis for the treatment of the complete atrioventricular septal defect in our institute.

“…Data from seven studies with 322 patients in the modified single-patch group and 275 in the two-patch group were pooled for the analysis of pacemaker implantation for atrioventricular block. 12,14 19 An I 2 value of 0% demonstrated insignificant heterogeneity. There was no significant difference in the odds of postoperative pacemaker implantation for atrioventricular block between the two groups (odds ratio: 0.89, 95% confidence interval: 0.23-3.43).…”

“…A total of nine studies with 225 patients in the modified single-patch group and 332 in the two-patch group were pooled for the analysis of CPB time. 7,10 18 An I 2 value of 70% demonstrated significant heterogeneity. The modified single-patch had a mean CPB time of 107 minutes and the two-patch repair had a mean time of 129 minutes.…”
