Modified State Surface Approach to Study Unsaturated Soil Hysteresis Behavior

Abstract: Unsaturated soils are often used as a construction material in transportation infrastructures. In this situation, unsaturated soils are subjected to cyclic mechanical loading from traffic loads or wetting-drying cycles in seasonal climatic conditions. While mechanical hysteresis is a common feature of soils in general, hydraulic hysteresis is associated with unsaturated soils. Although several constitutive models for unsaturated soils have been proposed, the mechanical and hydraulic hysteresis behavior of unsa… Show more

“…Zhang & Lytton [5] extended the MSSA for the coupled hydro-mechanical behaviour of unsaturated soils. Riad & Zhang [17,29] further extended the MSSA to include the coupled hydromechanical hysteresis for unsaturated soils. In this paper, only the relationships for volume changes in soil structure are discussed.…”

“…Recently, Riad and Zhang ( 42 ) further extended the MSSA to study the hydro-mechanical hysteresis behavior of unsaturated soils under isotropic conditions. The main goal was to consider the cyclic traffic mechanical loads and the hydraulic behavior as a result of seasonal climatic changes.…”

“…The soil mechanical and hydraulic hysteresis behavior can be easily considered by adopting the approach proposed by Riad and Zhang ( 42 ) and expressed incrementally in Equations 28 and 29. Three additional model parameters will be added to account for the hysteresis behavior ( H u = 2 , A = 3 . 0 , and B = 0 . 92 ).…”

“…The original MSSA (69)(70)(71) was based on critical state soil mechanics in which the soil hysteresis behavior was neglected. Recently, Riad and Zhang (73) extended the MSSA to account for coupled hydro-mechanical behavior considering both hydraulic and mechanical hysteresis. It is worth noting that mechanical hysteresis is neglected by most of the existing models.…”
