Modified U-Shaped Resonator as Decoupling Structure in MIMO Antenna

Abstract: This paper presents an isolation enhancement of two closely packed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) antenna system using a modified U-shaped resonator. The modified U-shaped resonator is placed between two closely packed radiating elements resonating at 5.4 GHz with an edge to edge separation distance of 5.82 mm (λ∘/10). Through careful adjustment of parametric modelling, the isolation level of −23 dB among the densely packed elements is achieved. The coupling behaviour of the MIMO elements is analysed by… Show more

“…Microstrip technology was used for implementation of the proposed filter. This technology has several advantages, such as low fabrication cost, planar configuration and ease of integration with other Radio Frequency (RF) components; hence, it has been widely used in microwave component designs, including filters [30,31], metasurfaces [32][33][34], power dividers [35][36][37], phase shifters [38] and antennas [39][40][41][42]. The LCE circuit is used to locate the transmission zeros (TZs) of the resonator.…”

“…The future generation communication systems demand the high data rate, low cost, efficient, and less complex approaches to handle the exponential increase in the number of users [1]. Thus, the fifth generation (5G) of communication technology has become a promising candidate for the said systems [2,3].…”

“…To make the MIMO system work normally, it is necessary to reduce the correlation of the antenna elements in the system [1]. For this reason, several methods for reducing the correlation between elements in an antenna array in a MIMO system have been proposed, for example, defect ground structure decoupling [2,3], parasitic stub decoupling [4][5][6], neutralization line decoupling [7][8][9], diversity technology decoupling [10][11][12], and electromagnetic band-gap (EBG) structure decoupling [13,14].…”
