Modifying the polarization state of terahertz radiation using anisotropic twin-domains in LaAlO_3

Abstract: Polarization-resolved terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy was utilized to examine the complex refractive index of lanthanum aluminate (LaAlO3), a rhombohedrally distorted perovskite that exhibits crystallographic twin domains. The uniaxial anisotropy of the refractive index was quantified. The ellipticity of THz radiation pulses after transmission through single domains indicated that LaAlO3 can be used as a quarter- or half-wave plate. The effective anisotropy of [001]-oriented LaAlO3 was found to be red… Show more

“…(1). The refractive indices of the LISe crystal exhibit orientation dependence, which was also observed from the polarization-resolved THz time-domain spectroscopy of LaAlO 3 [16]. The values of n Y and n Z are very close, which indicates that the refractive index ellipsoid in bcut principle plane is close to circular.…”

“…A wire grid polariser was placed after the THz emitter. THz pulses were focused on samples placed in a superconducting magnet in the Faraday geometry, where = -B 0.0 7.5 T was applied along the growth axis in 0.1 T steps, and at T=3 K. To investigate the longitudinal and transverse response of HHs to an ac electric field, the orthogonal components of the THz radiation were probed using electro-optic sampling with a 〈111〉-oriented ZnTe crystal [17,18]. This directly yields the complex transverse conductivity .…”

“…5(a), and is flat and featureless for the PTFO-100 and PTFO-200 samples in the range below 10 meV. Above 10 meV all samples exhibit a sharp rise in transmission, an artifact which arises from the LaAlO 3 substrate, which acts as a half wave plate at these frequencies40. The response for the PTFO-300 film displays a prominent reduction in transmission around 9 meV in Fig.…”

“…Data were averaged over four possible orientations of the PTFO samples and a blank substrate (VV, VH, HV, HH, where H/V represent horizontal or vertical orientation of the sample and substrate respectively). This removes the influence of substrate anisotropy40.…”
