Modulation of gut‐microbiota through probiotics and dietary interventions to improve host health

Vaishali Lekchand Dasriya,
Mrinal Samtiya,
Soniya Ranveer
et al.

Abstract: Dietary patterns play an important role in regards to the modulation and control of the gut microbiome composition and function. The interaction between diet and microbiota plays an important role in order to maintain intestinal homeostasis, which ultimately afftect the host's health. Diet directly impacts the microbes that inhabit the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), which then contributes to the production of secondary metabolites, such as short‐chain fatty acids, neurotransmitters, and antimicrobial peptides. … Show more

“…Dietary and therapeutic response: Dietary components directly affect the composition and activity of gut microbiota, thereby affecting the host’s nutritional metabolism ( 34 ). Specific dietary patterns, such as those rich in dietary fiber, antioxidants, or anti-inflammatory foods, may enhance the body’s response to chemotherapy drugs, radiation therapy, or ICI therapy by optimizing the gut microbiota, reducing therapeutic toxicity ( 35 37 ).…”

“…The immune cells are stimulated via regulation of gene expression and signaling pathways in the host cells which results in macrophage activation and enhanced phagocytosis [63]. Another mechanism by which probiotics exert their health benefits on the host is by the production of antimicrobial agents or compounds such as bacteriocins which exert competitive exclusion of pathogens [64]; improving the digestion and absorption of food [65,66]; as well as alteration of the intestinal microflora [67,68]. As earlier mentioned, probiotics are live microorganisms which when administered in adequate quantity exert or confer a health benefit on the host [69] and Lactobacillus and Bifidobacteriumspecies are the most commonly used.…”

“…Following the First and Second World Wars, the population's nutritional intake changed and, consequently, consumption of ultra-processed food increased as did sedentary lifestyles; both were responsible for a decline in health and quality of life. Such a decrease in nutritional quality directly affects bacterial intestinal metabolism and its local microbiota, leading to metabolic conditions such as obesity, diabetes, and heart and liver diseases [1][2][3].…”

“…In parallel, emerging scientific knowledge concerning health and disease modulation by the microbiota and its several metabolites is focused on the so-called "brain-gut axis"; 2 of 34 thus, the interruption of its healthy and effective communication results in a number of diseases associated with inflammation, cardiovascular risks, obesity, type 2 diabetes (DM2), and other endocrine pathologies, such as hypothyroidism and polycystic ovary syndrome [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10].…”
