Modulation of serum gastric parietal cell antibody level by levamisole and vitamin B12 in oral lichen planus

Abstract: For GPCA-positive OLP patients, treatment modality containing vitamin B12 can effectively reduce the high serum GPCA level to undetectable level. OLP patients with underlying autoimmune atrophic gastritis trait should receive a maintenance vitamin B12 treatment for life.

“…Even the patients possess one or more of these contributing factors, the development of PA may still need a long period of years (Toh et al , ; Lahner and Annibale, ). Our previous study found that for GPCA‐positive oral lichen planus patients, treatment modality containing intramuscular injection of vitamin B12 can effectively reduce the high serum GPCA level to undetectable level (Lin et al , ). This finding indicates that intramuscular administration of sufficient vitamin B12 not only can reverse the patients' GPCA status from positive to negative but also can be an effective treatment modality for PA because vitamin B12 can be absorbed directly to blood stream but not through the intrinsic factor‐mediated pathway.…”

“…Based on our findings, hematological screening for hematinic deficiencies should be included in routine laboratory examination of OLP patients. Several studies have proposed that vitamin replacement may improve the general health of OLP patients and increase their healing ability [12,36]. Therefore, compensation of hematinic deficiencies with adequate nutritional supplements or in combination with other drugs, is supposed to produce improved therapeutic effects on OLP patients [12,36].…”

“…Our findings of the present study highly suggested that the hematological screening for hematinic deficiencies should be included in routine laboratory examination of OLP patients. Several studies have proposed that vitamin replacement may improve the general health state of OLP patients and increase their healing ability [6,24]. Therefore, compensation of hematinic deficiencies with adequate nutritional supplements, or in combination with other drugs, is supposed to produce improved therapeutic effects on OLP patients [6,24].…”

Therefore, compensation of hematinic deficiencies with adequate nutritional supplements, or in combination with other drugs, is supposed to produce improved therapeutic effects on OLP patients [6,24]. In addition, dietary assessment and guidance to maintain adequate nutrition and optimal quality of life should be considered as a component of OLP management [16].…”
