Modulation of Social Cognition via Hallucinogens and “Entactogens”

Abstract: Social cognition is a fundamental ability in human everyday lives. Deficits in social functioning also represent a core aspect of many psychiatric disorders. Yet, despite its significance, deficits in social cognition skills are insufficiently targeted by current treatments. Hallucinogens and entactogens have been shown to have the potential to modulate social processing. This article reviews the literature on the influence of hallucinogens and entactogens on social processing in controlled experimental studie… Show more

“…Additionally, the pharmacology underlying psychedelic-induced changes in social cognition and behavior is not well understood yet. Some acute effects of psychedelics on social processing have been shown to be blocked by pre-administration of 5-HT2A receptor agonists (for a detailed review, see [125]). Neuropeptides such as oxytocin have repeatedly, although not unanimously, been related to social behavior [126].…”

“…While psychedelic agents have long been used in traditional communal settings for rites of healing and prayer, and while psychedelics were administered with adjunctive group therapy to hundreds of participants prior to federal drug scheduling, [24] no modern clinical trials have investigated the safety or feasibility specifically of psilocybin-assisted group therapy. Yet mid-century [25] and modern [ [26] , [27] , [28] ] research on psychedelics emphasizes that an important therapeutic mechanism may be the enhanced capacity for interpersonal connection that patients can experience for days after drug administration. Indeed, the optimal method for delivering psilocybin therapy remains an open question.…”

“…To date, psychoactive phenethylamines represent the third largest group of NPS, after synthetic cannabinoids and cathinones, for a total of 99 molecules [ 6 , 7 ]. Also, some psychoactive phenethylamines were developed as potential drugs for psychiatric conditions [ 8 , 9 , 10 ], but they have not yet been put on the market due to their adverse effects or the lack of the desired therapeutic effects [ 11 ].…”
