Modulation Schemes With Enhanced Switch Thermal Distribution for Single-Phase AC–DC–AC Reduced-Switch Converters

Abstract: Modulation schemes can significantly change the performance of a converter in the steady state. They have thus been extensively studied, but directed more at three-phase topologies, where triplen offsets are added. Single-phase systems, including ac-dc-ac, are less widely pursued, even though various topologies have since been proposed. The intention of this paper is thus to study two promising single-phase ac-dc-ac converters using reduced number of switches, and subsequently proposes modulation schemes for t… Show more

“…It is essential to design the three-phase to single-phase power conversion with the double-stage AC-DC-AC converter for the generator in the standalone power system, and it is the most industrially established topology composed of a front-end rectifier, DC-link capacitors, an inverter and an LC filter, and decoupled control process could be obtained to achieve the control structure simplicity and flexibility. However, the bulky life-cycle electrolytic capacitor implemented for the power fluctuation mitigation degrades the reliability of the system, and the volume and weight of the inductor of the LC filter are relatively large and heavy [5][6][7][8][9]. Furthermore, the two-stage power conversion also reduces the efficiency of power conversion and increases the cost of the standalone power system.…”

“…The single-phase ac-dc-ac conversion can be performed by using the traditional four-leg (eight switches) topology. There are some works in the literature in which topologies with reduced switches count are proposed as single-phase load suppliers [19,[30][31][32][33]. The three-leg (six switches) converter, as shown in Fig.…”

“…1a and denoted in this paper as 3L1D, i.e. three legs and one dc-link, is developed in many ways [19,31,33]. The converter 3L1D is quite interesting because, when compared with the four-leg topology, it uses two switches less and can generate lower power losses by using a shared leg between grid and load.…”
