The high chemical and structural diversity of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), which are porous crystalline materials, has attracted significant academic and industrial interest. However, the poor processability of MOF powders limits their full potential in practical applications. Toward this end, MOF-based composite materials increase the framework robustness and subsequent utility. Among these hybrid materials, MOF composites prepared on commercially available textile fibers offer the high flexibility needed for important applicationssuch as heterogeneous catalysis, chemical sensing, pollutant removal, and drug releasewhile maintaining the functional properties of MOFs. The ability to further tailor these composites’ shapes for incorporation into industrial equipment increases their potential in applications such as adsorption devices and protective gears. In this Review, we summarize recently reported MOF/fiber fabrication methods and applications. Our discussion on the advancements and remaining issues of these production methods segues into several highlighted applications of MOF/fiber composites, especially within adsorption devices and protective gears.

It is challenging to fabricate stable, complete, controllable, homogeneous metal–organic framework composites. Hereof, we suggested a versatile method where nanocrystals were assembled inside the porous polymer by synergistic chemical synthesis and permeation flow in and through its pores. The poly(tetrafluoroethylene) (PTFE)/ZnO and PTFE/ZIF-8 were fabricated as the prototype of the composites. For fabricating the composite, ZnO was first synthesized inside the pores followed by ligand vapor treatment. The even and well-distributed ZnO nanorods of 10–30 nm were synthesized inside pores of PTFE and converted into ZIF-8. The ZnO and ZIF-8 were quantified in 281 and 431 mg g–1 against the original PTFE, respectively. The composite is stable and the nanocrystals are not readily washed away. The adsorption uptake (C3 > C2 > C1) of the light hydrocarbon gases for the PTFE/ZIF-8 nanocomposite were preliminarily evaluated. The adsorption selectivities were calculated, where the selectivities for C2H6/CH4 and C3H8/CH4 were 10.9 and 42.8, respectively.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), an emerging class of porous organic-inorganic hybrid materials, have shown great potential for water and wastewater treatment applications. However, pure MOF powders have limited practical applications in water treatment due to their insolubility, poor processability, brittleness, safety hazard from dust formation, and difficult separation from aqueous solutions. Thus, exploring potential MOFs composites with improved separation performance is of great importance. The marriage of MOFs with electrospun nanofiber with forethought into the final product's morphology, structure, and chemistry has opened up new opportunities for efficient wastewater treatment. The present review exhaustively summarizes the strategies to integrate MOFs into nanofibers via electrospinning to remove various pollutants (i.e., organic dyes, heavy metal ions, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, oily compounds, organic solvents, etc.) via adsorption, photodegradation, and membrane filtration. Besides, the most recent advances of electrospun MOF nanofibers for wastewater treatment and their current challenges and future outlook are delineated.
