Molar‐incisor hypomineralization in quilombola children and adolescents: A study of prevalence and associated factors

Abstract: Objectives: This cross-sectional observational study determined the prevalence and factors associated with molar-incisive hypomineralization (MIH) in quilombola children and adolescents in north-eastern Brazil. Methods: The sample consisted of 251 children and adolescents (8 to 14 years old) living in the rural quilombola community Lagoas in São Raimundo Nonato, Piauí (census population). Sociodemographic and health-related data were collected from pre-, peri-and post-natal health records and a clinical examin… Show more

“…As a consequence, there is a predisposition to significant retention of dental biofilm, tooth brushing difficulties, and a rapid caries progression 11 . Historically, this disorder is also known as “cheese teeth,” “hypomineralized” or “dysmineralized” permanent first molars, “idiopathic enamel hypomineralization,” and “nonfluoride hypomineralization.” 7,12 MIH is relatively frequent in many pediatric populations worldwide, exhibiting a very wide prevalence rate, ranging from 2.4 to over 40 percent 2,4‐6,8,10‐36 …”

“…2,[4][5][6]8, Most of the prevalence studies have been carried out in European and Asian countries; however, there have been several recent reports on this clinical topic in Latin American countries. For instance, Mexico, 11,[25][26][27]34 Brazil, 6,10,35,36 Chile, 13 Argentina/Uruguay, 16 and Colombia 23 ; the determined prevalence rates from these studies varied between 11.2 and 42.4 percent. Specifically, five studies have been conducted in México in well-definite and limited geographic zones, on school children from Mexico City and Naucalpan (Estado de México).…”

“…It will be very interesting to characterize expression of these proteins in cultured SCAPs and to determine whether oxygen concentration regulates the formation of active podosomes towards migration purposes. Also, the present detailed cartography of healthy apical papilla tissue could help to determine whether the structure of this tissue or of dental pulp tissue is altered in pathologies like Molar Incisor Hypomineralization (MIH), a serious health problem which is increasing for still unknown reasons among teenagers [ 61 , 62 , 63 ].…”
