Small scale foundries in Ghana are in search of a suitable coke for their foundry operations since there is no coal mine in Ghana. Two grades of spent prebaked aluminium carbon anodes (herein referred to as grade P and grade K), which are remnants from the aluminium electrolysis at Volta Aluminum Company (VALCO), an aluminium smelting company in Ghana, have been characterized to assess their quality and use as foundry coke. Proximate analysis and X-ray diffraction techniques have been used for their quality assessments. Coke grade P had lower moisture content, volatile matter and ash content compared to grade K. In both grades, sulphur and phosphorus contents were within requirements of a quality foundry coke. However, the volatile matter and ash contents of both grades were not satisfactory. Fixed carbon contents in both grades were below that of a quality foundry coke. Carbon structure of coke found in both grades is crystalline in nature. The crystalline width, Lc, was calculated to be 4.05 Å and 5.12 Å for grade K and P, respectively.

China possesses an amazing variety of low‐rank coal (LRC) resources. The developed strategies for the large‐scale use of coal resources in China suggest that achieving the grading effective conversion and utilization of LRC by mid–low‐temperature coal‐pyrolysis technologies can maximize LRC resources. On the basis of investigations on and the analysis of coal‐pyrolysis technologies, a comprehensive overview of the LRC pyrolysis technologies in recent years is described in this review. The technologies include square‐retort pyrolysis technology, upgraded square‐retort pyrolysis technology, solid‐heat‐carrier pyrolysis technology, belt‐type‐furnace pyrolysis technology, and rotary‐kiln pyrolysis technology. Focusing on the technical characteristics with analysis and comparison of different LRC pyrolysis technologies, we summarize the main problems in the development of pyrolysis processes, namely, dust separation of coal tar, wastewater treatment, and incomplete pyrolysis reaction mechanisms. Moreover, suitable methods for the rational and efficient utilization of LRC resources are discussed to achieve the sustainable development of pyrolysis technologies based on optimizing pyrolysis reactors and developing deep‐processing multigeneration technologies.

In this study, a lignite sample from Afşin‐Elbistan area of Turkey was briquetted using rice husk as additive. The lignite and the rice husk were first briquetted separately without blending under pressures of 280, 555, 830, and 1110 MPa. Lignite–rice husk blends were prepared to contain 2, 5, 10, and 20 wt % rice husk as additive. The blends were also briquetted using three different binder materials (molasses, starch, and black liquor). Shatter index, compressive strength, and water resistance of the formed briquettes were determined and compared. Addition of rice husk into Afşin‐Elbistan lignite caused to decrease the water resistance, but improved the mechanical strength of the briquettes. Using binder materials affected both compressive strength and shatter index negatively. But the water resistance of the briquettes increased with increasing binder material concentration. Adding rice husk changed the combustion characteristics of Afşin‐Elbistan lignite considerably and shifted its burning profile to lower temperatures. © 2016 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 36: 742–748, 2017
