Molecular and Serological Survey of Selected Viruses in Free-Ranging Wild Ruminants in Iran

Abstract: A molecular and serological survey of selected viruses in free-ranging wild ruminants was conducted in 13 different districts in Iran. Samples were collected from 64 small wild ruminants belonging to four different species including 25 Mouflon (Ovis orientalis), 22 wild goat (Capra aegagrus), nine Indian gazelle (Gazella bennettii) and eight Goitered gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa) during the national survey for wildlife diseases in Iran. Serum samples were evaluated using serologic antibody tests for Peste de … Show more

“…Presence of wildlife population along the national park in Borgu, Niger State, Nigeria, where cloven-hoofed species come in contact with livestock was shown to be the probable exposure factor that contributed to high FMD seropositivity in livestock observed in the area [37]. e results from this study corroborate with other studies in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Botswana, Namibia, India, Chad, and Iran that demonstrated FMDV antibodies in wildlife [10,11,28,[40][41][42][43][44][45]. High FMDV prevalence in waterbucks observed in this study reflects their ecology and living ecosystem which is consistent with other findings in East Africa and Zimbabwe [27,41,46].…”

“…MCF cases have been documented in both India (15) and Iran (16,17), which border Pakistan. In Pakistan in most rural areas, livestock farms, animal hospitals and research centres, it is a common practice to keep MCF reservoir and susceptible animals in close proximity (18,19).…”

“…This finding being the first of its kind in the study area reveals that FMD could be a problem in wildlife in Nigeria. This is not surprising as FMD is endemic in Nigerian livestock (18, 20, 39, 23). Presence of wildlife population along the national park in Borgu Niger State Nigeria where cloven hoofed species come in contact with live stock was shown to be the probable exposure factor that contributed to high FMD sero-positivity in livestock observed in the area (37).…”

“…The first reported case of FMD outbreak in Nigeria was in 1924, which was attributed to type O virus (16). Subsequently, other serotypes (A, SAT 1 and SAT 2) were reported (17, 18, 19, 20, 21, 22) and recently SAT 3 serotype (23).…”
