Molecular-Beam Maser for the Shorter-Millimeter-Wave Region: Spectral Constants of HCN and DCN

Abstract: A millimeter-wave molecular-beam maser has been made to operate as both an amplifier and an oscillator on the J= 1 -0 and the J= 2-1 transitions of HCN at 88.6 and at 177.2 kMc/ sec, respectively, thus doubling the previously operational frequency range of such masers. With this maser, hyperfine components of these transitions have been measured for H 12 C 14 N and D 2 C 4 N to nine significant figures. The spectral constants (in kc/sec) that are derived from these frequencies are, for HCN, £ 0 = 44315 975.7 ±… Show more

“…The intensities of the methylenimine signals increased over the temperature range 500-9008C. Moreover, signals due to HCN were also present, [17] weakly at 5008C, but strongly at 9008C. FWW interpreted this in terms of chemical activation of the methylenimine by 89 AE 5 kcal mol À1 arising from the activation energy for denitrogenation of azidomethane [18] ,38 AE 2 kcal mol À1 plus the exothermicity of the reaction ,51 AE 3 kcal mol -1 [19,20] (Eqns 1 and 2 and Fig.…”

“…Among the transitions observed in the current survey, 2 = 0 data were taken from de Lucia & Gordy (1969), and for several of the higher excited transitions from de Lucia & Helminger (1977). The H 13 CN entries are mostly based on Fuchs et al (2004) and for 2 = 1 and 2 = 0, respectively.…”
