Rice is the main staple for more than half of the world’s population. In Ghana, rice is the fastest growing food commodity, and it is consumed by almost every household. However, yields continue to be low, as the pace of adoption of new varieties is low. The low rate of adoption has been attributed to failure of modern breeding to incorporate preferred traits for end users. This study thus employed an innovative set of breeding tools, the G+ tools, in identifying gendered trait preferences to develop a robust product profile through a mixed-method approach. The assertion that “men focus more on production and marketing related traits as women focus on production and cooking qualities” was also ascertained. Descriptive, inferential and content analyses were conducted, and the results indicate ecological differences in varietal choices. Production and marketing traits are jointly preferred by the gender groups. However, women and young women paid attention to post-harvest and cooking quality traits. The gender impact scores generated indicated there are tradeoffs in the traits preferred. These findings highlight the significance of recognizing geographical differences and gender heterogeneity in relation to varietal and trait preferences. In conclusion, the outcomes emphasize the necessity of gender-sensitive breeding work that considers the various needs and trait priorities of targeted men and women rice farmers in breeding decisions for a robust rice product profile.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to examine how employee development factors directly influence succession planning and indirectly improve employee performance using the tenets of human capital theory. Moreover, whether succession planning enhances employee performance or not? Design/methodology/approach Using the time-lag method, this study collected data from bank employees and tested the proposed model and hypotheses in Mplus. Findings The results from 239 participants highlight that succession planning improves bank employee performance. Employee orientation and training and development are positively linked to succession planning and employee performance. Succession planning mediates the association between employee development factors and employee performance. Practical implications The research assists bank management to promote a learning culture for developing their human resources to realize their organizational goals. The findings exhibit that succession planning generates a pool of skilled and talented employees, which creates a competitive edge for banks having skilled employees and reduces recruitment costs. Banks to save human recruitment costs. Moreover, bank managers can solve the issue of sudden vacant positions and provide excellent customer service. Originality/value Retaining talented individuals has remained a challenging task for organizations in the current business environment. The research contributes to theoretically and empirically exploring the association between employee development factors (training and development and employee orientation) and employee performance via succession planning to retain talented employees in the organization.

The success of business organisations in today’s very competitive environment depends significantly on the people working in those organisations. Employee training and development happen to be one of the strategies as they positively affect both employee and organisational performance. There are different methods available for employee training and development. The aim of this research work is to improve training and development Programme in Pharmaceutical firms for enhanced employee performance. The data for the research work were generated using questionnaires and oral interviews. Data obtained was presented in tabular form using simple percentages. The results show that the level of training and development in pharmaceutical firms is at a low level. The results also show that there is a positive correlation between training and development and employee performance. Using the decision matrix, having in place a training process was found to be the most appropriate option for implementation.
