Molecular characteristics of mumps viruses isolated in Taiwan from 2006 to 2016

Abstract: Sixteen mumps virus (MuV) sequences collected in Taiwan between 2006 and 2016 were characterized as genotype F (n = 1), G (n = 7), H (n = 4), J (n = 2), and K (n = 2). Mumps genotype F strain was imported from China in 2008 which was in accordance with the epidemic genotype in China. The Philippines was indicated as export country of three genotype H strains in 2007–2010 and Vietnam as export country of one genotype K strain in 2016 that matched with genotypes described in previous reports. Four strains of gen… Show more

“…The nucleotide sequence of our strain has been submitted to the DNA Data Bank of Japan (DDBJ) with accession no. LC486118 and J but not genotype F [11,13]. The genotype F strain found in this study may have been brought over to Sabah by travelers from regions with circulating genotype F MuV.…”

“…Genotype F has limited circulation and has been endemic in China since its discovery in 1995 [ 10 , 11 ]. Although genotype F has occasionally been found in other countries in North America, Europe and Asia, the MuV strains from these countries were epidemiologically linked to China [ 12 , 13 ]. Interestingly, the MuV strain detected in this study did not only cluster with strains from China but also phylogenetically related to a strain from Canada, where the patient had a travel history to India [ 14 ].…”

“…Mostly, these outbreaks had been caused by the global genotype G. Apart from genotype G single outbreaks were caused by genotype H MuV. Recently, outbreaks were also caused by genotype K MuV in Eastern Asia [ 12 ].…”
