Molecular Characterization and Target Prediction of Candidate miRNAs Related to Abiotic Stress Responses and/or Storage Root Development in Sweet Potato

Abstract: Sweet potato is a tuberous root crop with strong environmental stress resistance. It is beneficial to study its storage root formation and stress responses to identify sweet potato stress- and storage-root-thickening-related regulators. Here, six conserved miRNAs (miR156g, miR157d, miR158a-3p, miR161.1, miR167d and miR397a) and six novel miRNAs (novel 104, novel 120, novel 140, novel 214, novel 359 and novel 522) were isolated and characterized in sweet potato. Tissue-specific expression patterns suggested tha… Show more

“…The “sponge effect” [ 8 ] describes how lncRNA might operate as a miRNA decoy, competing with mRNA for miRNA binding and thereby regulating the expression of miRNA target genes. In tomato yellow mosaic virus (TYMV), two lncRNAs, slylnc1077 and slylnc0195, were discovered to behave as decoys for miRNAs [ 9 ]. Slylnc0195 expression is up-regulated in tomatoes that are infected with TYMV; however, miR166a expression is downregulated.…”

“…They confer gene-silencing abilities by cleaving messenger RNA (mRNA) and restricting the translation of transcripts [ 15 , 16 ]. miRNA has been found to play essential roles in various biological processes, including plant growth and development as well as biotic and abiotic stress responses [ 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 ]. Many miRNAs have been found to influence plant performance and yield-related agronomic traits, making them attractive targets for crop improvement [ 21 , 22 ].…”

“…Then, we observed the transcriptome and proteome in these two cultivars ( Meng et al, 2020 ). In addition, candidate miRNAs related to the storage root development of sweetpotato were identified in salt-tolerant cultivar “Xushu 22” ( Tang et al, 2020 ; Sun L. et al, 2022 ). Recently, we identified hundreds miRNAs in salt-sensitive cultivar “Xushu 32” by high-throughput deep sequencing and demonstrated that miRNAs play an important role in sweetpotato under salt stress adaptation ( Yang et al, 2020 ).…”
