Molecular characterization of avian rotaviruses circulating in Italian poultry flocks

Abstract: Avian rotaviruses are still largely undefined despite being widespread in several avian species and despite the economic impact of rotavirus (RV) enteritis in poultry flocks. In this study, the presence of different avian RV groups was investigated in commercial poultry flocks reared in Northern and Central Italy and with a history of enteric diseases. Faeces or intestinal contents from different avian species previously found to contain RV particles by electron microscopy (EM) were analysed by both RNA-polyac… Show more

“…The complete genome of rotavirus F has only been molecularly characterised from chickens 18 , although partial sequences of the same have been detected and characterised from a pig (unpublished) and partridge 47 . The current study is the first to detect and characterise rotavirus F from a duck species, albeit only a partial segment being identified.…”

“…RVG was first identified in broiler chicks with runting and stunting syndrome [ 22 ] while its role in these diseases remains to be clarified [ 25 ]. RVG has consistently been reported from South Africa, Germany and Italy [ 24, 26 ] in association with diarrhoea, growth depression and enteric diseases. While data on RVG are accumulating, the diversity of avian RVG, its infection status of in avian flocks and its role in avian disease require further investigation.…”

“…RVG was first identified in a chicken from Northern Ireland [ 18 ] and later detected in turkeys [ 23 ]. Subsequently, RVG has been identified in Brazil, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and South Africa [ 24–26 ]. RVG was found in broiler chicks with runting and stunting syndrome [ 22 ], but its role in the diseases remains unclear.…”

“…In most surveys both clinically affected and clinically unaffected birds were found to be shedding rotavirus RNA in faeces, so the significance of this is uncertain. Simultaneous or sequential infections with different rotaviral groups is frequently observed in broiler chicken and turkey flocks [ 1 , 9 11 ].…”
