Molecular characterization of dengue viruses isolated from patients in Central Java, Indonesia

Abstract: We reveal the molecular and virological characteristics of DENV in Purwokerto, Banyumas regency, Central Java. The genotype and phylogenetic analyses indicate the endemicity of the circulating DENV in the city. Our serotype and genotype data provide references for future dengue molecular epidemiology studies and disease management in the region.

“…A full assessment of the 120 references resulted in the exclusion of 53 references due to the following: full texts were unavailable, and the available abstracts did not include adequate information to satisfy our outcome, the full text did not include adequate or complete serotype data, and nonstandard methods were used for serotyping. This resulted in 67 eligible studies, of which 13 references were from national journals . An additional 11 studies were included from reference list .…”

“…In total, 78 eligible studies were included for DENV serotype analysis . Of all the eligible studies, four studies were conducted based on mosquito isolates while the remaining studies assessed DENV isolates from human samples . Sixty two studies investigated dengue cases among local inhabitants of Indonesia,…”

“…Results demonstrate the predominance of DENV-2, followed by DENV-1, as reported to circulate in Indonesia in 2014/15 [ 35 ], the major travel destination of this cohort. Since Indonesia and Thailand are primary travel destinations where dengue was acquired in our cohort, and these countries have been suggested as sources via air travel for movement of different DENV serotypes throughout SEA [ 36 ], the recent reports of DENV-3 predominance in regions of Indonesia [ 37 , 38 ] suggest that this serotype is likely to become more common in the DENV-infected traveller returning to SA. RT-PCR suggested the potential for mixed infections, with serotype-specific positivity observed for DENV-1/-2 and DENV-2/3.…”
