Molecular characterization of enteroviruses detected in Gyeong-Ju and Po-Hang provinces of Korea in 2003

Abstract: We identified and characterized enteroviruses by amplifying the partial VP1 gene from pediatric patients with aseptic meningitis and other enterovirus-related diseases from the Gyeong-Ju and Po-Hang provinces of Korea in 2003. We identified two strains each of coxsackievirus A (CA) 6, CA9, and CA10; three enterovirus 71 (EV71) strains; and six echovirus 30 (E30) strains. The three EV71 strains were characterized as genogroup C4. These results are the first documentation reporting the occurrence of CA10 and EV7… Show more

“…In previous Korean studies 21 , 22 , 23 , 24 ), outbreaks of aseptic meningitis caused by various serotypes of EV such as Echo 6, Echo 9, Echo11, Echo13, Echo 18, Echo 25, Echo30, and EV 71 were reported. In this study, Echo 30 (9 patients) was the most frequently detected serotype, which has been previously associated with an epidemic in Gyeongbuk province in 2003 23 ). Some of the limitations of this study are that the study was retrospective, included one center study and used sample and subject information that was previously obtained by the Bank.…”

“…The earliest characterized subgenotype C4 strain SHZH98 is in cluster b, but for more systematic classification (usually based on chronological order), the older and recent strains should belong to cluster a and b respectively. Since the late 1990s, EV71 subgenotype C4 strains have been frequently reported in Asian countries [22,[32][33][34][35][36][37]. The subgenotype C4 was further divided into two clusters, C4b and C4a [22,37], which are better to be renamed as genotypes D1a and D1b respectively.…”

“…44 In 1997, a large outbreak of EV71 in Sarawak, Malaysia, heralded the start of a new series of outbreaks across the Asia-Pacifi c region (table 2). [9][10][11][12][13][14][45][46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53] In Sarawak, 2618 HFMD cases and 34 deaths were recorded between May and July, 1997; around the same time EV71 caused four deaths in peninsular Malaysia and several cases of severe neurological disease in Japan. 4,11,54 In 1998, the largest EV71 epidemic so far occurred in Taiwan: 7 an estimated 1·5 million people were infected and 405 children were admitted to hospital for serious neurological complications, of whom 78 died.…”
